Reading the Warning Signs Before a Diesel Turns Into a Rebuild

By Fleet Services Orange County Editorial Team · 2026-04-07 · 6 min read

Diesel engines are built to last, but they signal trouble long before they quit. Reading those signals early is the difference between a sensor replacement and a full rebuild.

Signs worth stopping for

  • Excessive exhaust smoke, especially blue or black
  • Hard starting or extended cranking
  • Loss of power under load
  • Rising oil consumption
  • Coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant
  • New knocking or vibration
  • Repeated DPF or DEF fault codes

If you see any of these, get a compression and leak-down test before the problem grows. Diesel diagnostics start at our posted rate and are credited toward the repair. Call (714) 909-1844.
